After about a decade living in the area, I decided to visit the Flower show! It was more because I wanted to take photographs 😉 So, bought tickets online which saved some ten bucks. We had to drop of son to college after his spring break. Rt. 76 or Schuylkill was a killer i.e., a time killer. Lots of traffic. After so many years, the west suburbs in Philly are still only connected to Center City by only one expressway and it is a two lane. So many other cities have a lot better infrastructure. Don’t tell me there is no space, we have skyways built all over Jacksonville, Portland and look at China. Anyway, it was an hour+ ride for what would normally be a 45 minuter. We started to the Convention Center around 3:45 PM. Traffic was okay as we decided to avoid 695 into town. We found parking a couple of blocks of Market and the walk back saw a lot of people getting out in the season’s first Spring-like day. It was high 50s in the afternoon.

If you haven’t been to the Convention Center, as you enter it you will be getting into a space that is as big as a football field! There were only coffee shops and wine tasting events. It was a bit hard to find directions and staff were merely chatting away at the ticket counter. We climbed the escalators only to find huge and empty conference rooms. Finally an attendant directed us deep into the bowels of the center and we started seeing glimpses of what should be a flower show. So far it was all shops and I had started to dislike the authenticity of the show itself. Once inside the main area, it was different with plenty of flora and fauna.

One thing that stuck my mind earlier in the day was that the Convention Center is an enclosed place. So it wouldn’t be ideal setting for plants and flowers, right? That is what it was. While there was adequate lighting for the eye to see, it isn’t the same for the camera. The main parts of the flowers while illuminated, the back of these would all appear black. This is in fact great as an effect, but it wouldn’t depict a natural setting. I did get a lot of good shots because of the lens I used, the Canon 70-200mm F4. F4 means it works very well in a well lighted situation such as a sunny or bright outdoors. With lower light, there is a tendency to magnify shake, but the IS (Image Stabilization) of the lens held up well. You can see some of the photos I have posted.
